CONTENT:
Phase I covers: design and management of the riding program; building the team; the horse; physical, mental/cognitive, emotional and learning disabilities; developmental delays; youth-at-risk; speech, language and hearing disabilities; visual disabilities; learning styles; human anatomy; development and postural responses; tack and adaptive equipment; resources, horse handling, equine gait analysis; developing your eye; horse and rider working together.

AUDIENCE: Participants must be 18 years of age.

 

CANDIDATE LEVELS OFFERED:
Instructor in Training: Volunteers, Potential Instructors, Health Care Providers (Physical, Occupational, Speech and Language Pathologists) etc.

Instructor: Riding Instructors, Therapeutic Riding Instructors, Program Directors, Health Care Providers with equine and equitation experience, etc

Master Instructor: Individuals with the background and experience to be educators in the field of equine assisted activities.

Auditors: Persons having successfully completed Phases I and II in the past, or PA Qualified Instructors completing continuing education hours to maintain certification).

 

LENGTH OF COURSE: 4 ½ days

 

REGISTRATION FEE:  2009 rates to be determined
$ 400 for 2008 PACTH members
$ 450 for non-members (Includes 2008 Membership)
$ 150 for auditors (2008 Membership required)

Registration includes all materials and handouts and refreshments (morning and afternoon).

Advance registration is required. Registration deadline will be April 20, 2008. No registrations will be accepted without an accompanying check or credit card payment. DUE TO CONSTRUCTION AT WILSON COLLEGE, ENROLLMENT IS LIMITED.  REGISTRATIONS WILL BE TAKEN ON A FIRST-COME-FIRST-SERVED BASIS.

DEADLINE and REFUND INFORMATION:  2009 dates to be determined
• The deadline for registration is April 20, 2008.
• Any registrations received after April 20, 2008 will incur a $20.00 late fee.

• Cancellation of registration or housing or meals received PRIOR TO April 20, 2008 are subject to a $30.00 administrative fee
• Cancellation of registration or housing or meals received AFTER April 20, 2008 are NON-REFUNDABLE.


CANCELLATIONS:
The PACTH reserves the right to close or cancel the course because of insufficient enrollment and/or unforeseen circumstances. All persons having registered will be notified if a cancellation becomes necessary so please include a daytime telephone number on the reservation form. 

LODGING:  2009 rates to be determined

Lodging is dorm-style with single bed, dresser, closet and desk on each side of room.  Bed linens and one set of towels are provided.  Communal bathrooms.  Rooms are on 1st or 3rd floor with no elevator -- first-come-first-served.  Dorm is not air conditioned.  No smoking allowed in dorm.

• Single Occupancy Room for 4 nights -- $92.00

• Double Occupancy Room for 4 nights -- $80.00 (please stipulate roommate name on registration form)


MEALS:  2009 rates to be determined
Meals are held in the dining hall. Participants may purchase a meal package that includes Saturday dinner, Sunday through Tuesday breakfast, lunch, and dinner, and Wednesday breakfast at a cost of $115.00.  Participants may make their own arrangements. Mid-morning and mid-afternoon refreshments are provided by PACTH.

 

EXAMINATIONS:
Instructor-in-Training: Open-book exam requiring grade of 80% or above; may opt to take riding test initially or when upgrading to Instructor rating.


InstructorClosed-book exam requiring grade of 80% or above. Riding test requiring candidate to perform a walk; trot/jog in posting position (must be on correct diagonal), regardless of tack style and sitting position, regardless of tack style; canter/lope (must exhibit ability to recognize correct lead); halt and back. 

 
Master Instructor: Riding test as for Instructor above and closed-book exam and essay exam requiring grade of 90% or above.

LEVEL UPGRADES:

To upgrade from Instructor-in-Training (IT) to Instructor:  Must apply for and complete testing for Instructor level within 3 years of receiving IT status. If not within 3 years, must audit Phase I and Phase II. Must take riding test if not already completed. Carries $100 testing fee and is offered at Phase I Training.

 

NOTE:
Completion of the Phase I Instructor Training is only the first of three phases to be completed for certification.  Candidates will receive a letter of phase completion only.  Certificates will be awarded only after successfully completing Phase III.
